Harp Course for Ages 9 -13 - Glastonbury, Somerset

Now in its 8th year, the course is designed for 9 -13 year olds to improve their existing harp skills in an environment that is fun, friendly and challenging. The event will combine workshops, ensemble playing, and a celebrity recital (sponsored by Morley Harps), together with leisure activities such as swimming and team games. The course will end with an informal concert.

Ibacus Summer Harp Course - Suffolk

The classes will be divided into different difficulty levels and musicians with little or no experience of traditional Irish music will be welcome.

Four Day Clarsach Course - near Durham

International Harp Summer School - Hitchin

The dynamic, internationally renowned team of Danielle Perrett and the Nash Ensemble’s Lucy Wakeford leads Benslow’s International Harp Summer School this year.

The course aims to recruit advanced players from conservatoire to professional levels who will benefit from our tutors’ deep experience and friendly and insightful guidance. Danielle will also lead a helpful evening session which demonstrates how the Pilates technique can help musicians. There will be an informal concert given by students on the final day and all course members will also receive a complimentary ticket to the flute, harp and viola recital given by Philippa Davies, Lucy Wakeford and Martin Outram on Friday 6 August at 8 pm as part of the Benslow International Series.

Harp Course for 7-18 Year Olds - London SE1

Run in conjuction with the Centre for Young Musicians Holiday Course.

Age range 7-11 and 11-15. There is a Junior and a Senior Harp Course. The harpists also get to play in the orchestras that are running in the conjoining course. So half of the day is spent with the harp tutor, and half with the orchestra. This means that the normal 'waiting around time' in orchestra is much reduced and that the harpists have the opportunity to do ensembles, sectionals, technical warm ups and also basic harp maintenance, such as learning how to change a string, tune etc.

The spectacular coastline of Cardigan Bay in West Wales is a fine backdrop for this inspirational week of Living Music. Aberystwyth MusicFest is an enticing fusion of Music Festival and Summer School; of experience and learning; of performance and appreciation.

An intensive week of harp study under the skilful guidance of Eleanor Turner, winner of the 2007 European Harp Competition, is open to players of grade 7 standard and above.

Eleanor will offer personal advice on choosing and preparing repertoire for competitions and concerts. She has herself attended summer courses with many of the great harpists including Catherine Michel, Susann McDonald and Erika Waardenburg. The knowledge, insight and encouragement garnered from these courses has been a continual source of motivation for Eleanor in her career thus far, so she has high hopes and aspirations for her own course participants at MusicFest!

A library of solo and harp ensemble music will be available for trying and buying, courtesy of Morley Harps.

The harp is approximately 69cm by 50cm, with a frame of wood, and a soundboard of cardboard, 19 nylon strings, and weighs just over a kilo. It is a playable musical instrument. The workshop will be led by Gillian Weiss, a harp maker from Australia.

No woodworking skills required. The harp can be painted or decorated as you like.

Harpists - have you always wanted to play with a flautist, but didn't know one?

This could be a chance to build a performing relationship with another player.......

There will be a set repertoire of flute and harp duet music for the day, which will cater for playing standards from grade 2 to grade 6+. On booking, participants will be allocated to the group appropriate to their standard and will be expected to buy the prescribed music for their group and prepare it in advance. Advanced players may if they wish sightread a copy of the music on the day.

The morning sessions will consist of rehearsing the set repertoire in small groups, with guidance and support from the tutors. A performance of each set piece will be selected for inclusion in the masterclasses, which will take place during the afternoon, and be given by Danielle Perrett. Interested listeners are welcome to attend the masterclass (1.30pm) in return for a donation to the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Tutors: Lynda Harrison (flute) and Danielle Perrett (harp)

All ages from 8 years upwards welcome. Participants must be able to read music. Grade 2 equivalent minimum standard required for both flautists and harpists. Both lever harp players and pedal harpists welcome.

The fee for the day is £20. The deadline for booking is March 27th.

Organised by The Clarsach Society London and South-East Branch.

All ages and abilities welcome. The course is intended to stimulate interest and enthusiasm for the non-pedal harp in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, although pedal harps are also welcome. All new course members will be given free membership for the remainder of the branch year (renewable in July each year).

Adult course attendees will be divided into three groups, according to playing experience, and eachgroup will have three teaching sessions, one with each of three tutors. There will be a separate elementary group for age 15 & under, with separate tutors. There will also be a ceilidh on the Saturday evening, and a tutor concert. A detailed timetable will be sent out to course participants.

International Harp Summer School - Hitchin, Herts

Now in its 17th successful year, the International Harp Summer School is directed by Charlotte Seale and Imogen Barford, both eminent teachers and harpists, who have had many years' experience of running harp courses.

This unique residential course operates at two levels: an Advanced Class (Grade 8 and above, suitable for advanced students and young professionals) and an Intermediate Class (for students Grade IV and above). It is an intensive course in a non-competitive environment, where classes are kept deliberately small. Attractions include recitals, masterclasses and workshops by guest artists, daily classes on solo repertoire with individual attention, private practice rooms, harp ensembles, opportunities for flute and harp duos, and an end-of-course concert.

The Clarsach Society London & South-East branch is organising a two day course for young people (up to the age of 21) with some harp-playing experience - either lever harp or pedal harp. The course is taught by Danielle Perrett.

The course will start on Tuesday evening with an early evening recital, followed by a meal at a local restaurant, and finish on Thursday evening with a harp party. During the day on Wednesday and Thursday there will be sessions on technique, ensemble-playing, Pilates for harpists, and examination coaching/advice for anyone who would like it. On Wednesday evening there will be a session on harp maintenance, given by Mike Parker.

The fee will be £80 (Clarsach Society members), £90 (non-members), excluding accommodation. This covers the recital and meal on Tuesday evening, all tuition, and lunch and supper on Wednesday and Thursday. Overnight accommodation if required should be arranged separately, but a list of local accommodation will be provided on request.

Sally Pryce is one of the leading harpists of her generation. Born in 1979, Sally Pryce studied at the Purcell School and Royal College of Music with Daphne Boden, graduating in 2001 with first class honours and the Worshipful Company of Musician's Silver Medal. The Young Concert Artists Trust (YCAT) selected her for representation in 2003.During her studies, Sally won numerous national and international prizes, including first prize in the 1999 London Harp Competition and in 1998, she reached the final six in the prestigious International Harp Contest held in Israel. In 1996 she won the Marisa Robles Harp Prize in the Royal Over-Seas League Competition and was a finalist in the BBC Young Musicians Competition.

This is an opportunity not to be missed for all students of the harp.

Mobius Concert - London

19th Nippon Harp Competition - 14th-18th November 2007

The 19th Nippon Harp Competition is organised by the Nippon Harp Association and the Soka City Cultural Organisation for the purpose of promoting harp music in Japan. Since the first competition held in 1987, it has been held annually in cooperation with Soka City.

The competition is open to harpists of all nationalities under the age of 35 as of 14th November 2007.

Derbyshire Harp Festival - 25-28th October 2007

Open Competition Balanced programme, participant's own choice, no longer than six minutes in duration. Marks will be awarded for performance, presence, musicianship and programme choice. Adult's and Children's Classes.

Entrants: £5.00 per competition/classification
Spectators: £5.00

Costs for the festival are £80.00 per adult delegate for the whole event, with £60.00 per child and £20.00 per spectator (only available with a Child). This covers the whole event (four classes, evening social which includes a buffet supper, entertainment and concert) with the exception of the trip to the Museum of Welsh Life.

Alternatively, each individual class is £25.00 each £15.00 per child and £5.00 per spectator (only available accompanying a child). The Social evening is £10.00 for children and £20.00 for adults. The concert is £10.00 for everyone.

Trip to the Museum of Welsh Life is £20.00 per person - to inlclude a private viewing of the historical harps in the store and lecture (suitable for adults and children) plus a chance to look round the museum.

Private Lesson with David Watkins: £40.00 per hour.
Private Lesson for beginners with a tutor: £30.00 per hour.

Fitkin Wall Tour - May to September 2007

Harpist Ruth Wall and composer Graham Fitkin are performing at various venues throughout the UK this summer.

The show includes some extraordinary music involving lever harp, bray harp, wire strung harp, synth and a fair bit of electronica thrown in. There are also wonderful visuals from Marc Silver.

Harp Course for 9 to 14 Year Olds - 16th-19th August at Glastonbury

This course is for 9-14 year olds to improve their existing harp skills in an environment that is fun, friendly and challenging. The event will combine workshops and ensemble playing with swimming, orienteering and T-shirt printing. An informal concert will end the course.

Park Stickney will be taking part in the International Harp Academy "Harp Masters" in Switzerland this August. He will be giving a solo jazz concert (titled "Action Harp") in the Gutenberg museum in the beautiful town of Fribourg.

The following day there will be a workshop where he will work with participants both individually and in groups.The group will explore improvisation, some jazz standards, the blues, some (very friendly) jazz theory, pedal slides (many, many pedal slides), and much more.

If you’re already playing jazz, or if you’ve always wanted to try, this class will be both fun and informative, all in a beautiful setting.

Helen-Elizabeth Naylor BA Hons (Wales) has been resident harpist and harp teacher and Wales Sales Exec at Clive Morley Harps Ltd since the year 2000. She studies with world famous virtuoso harpist David Watkins. Helen-Elizabeth has a thriving teaching practice of 40 students stretching from Cirencester in the west to Lincoln in the East, with a pass rate of 100% with ABRSM.

Intensive sessions to expand the participants' musical and technical horizons. Benefit from the wealth of diverse professional experience offered by the tutors. Deliberately small classes put the emphasis on individual attention and all students perform every day. The Focus is on solo repertoire, but flute and harp, and orchestral repertoire will also be studied. The course will start at 11am on the Tuesday and finish on the Saturday evening. There will be a public recital on the Thursday evening, free to course members.

From Bird Creek, Alaska, Cheyenne Brown has played the clarsach for eight years. She moved to Scotland in 2002 to study traditional Scottish music at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama where she received a BA in 2005 and is now pursuing Honours.

£30 for workshop. Optional farmhouse lunch £5.
